The Lithuanian geographical society (hereinafter – the Society) is a voluntary, independent scientific public organisation that unites professional geographers and other individuals or legal entities interested in the science and teaching of geography and promoting their progress. <br />The goal of the Society is to enhance the significance of geography as a science through the coordination of its members activities.
The Lithuanian Geographical Society organises scientific seminars, scientific expeditions, memorial events, popularises the science of geography and focuses geographers on solving problems relevant to the Lithuanian society.
The Society has more than 300 members (year 2010).
The main objectives of the Society are:
- to create and sustain an active community of geographers;
- to represent and advocate the interests of Lithuanian geographical community in Lithuania and abroad;
- to promote and enhance geographical research, knowledge, geographical ideas and spatial thinking;
- to announce the geographical problems of the Republic of Lithuania to the general public and encourage decision-making;
- to coordinate the scientific, educational and social activities of Lithuanian geographers.
