Uffington Heritage Watch

Founded
Legal seat:

Uffington Heritage Watch carries out research into, and promotes understanding of heritage: the natural & historic environment that forms the landscape in which we live. The built environment, vernacular or formal, old or recent, urban or rural, is the most visible example of cultural heritage. But heritage includes all the expressions of how we live. Tangible, material things, and the intangible too, such as stories and sounds and spaces that have meaning to us and contribute to our sense of identity and well-being.

We aim to identify, investigate, and conserve tangible and intangible heritage in the community, in line with the published implementation guidelines of the European Landscape Convention and the Valletta Convention on the protection of archaeological heritage.

How we are set up

Uffington Heritage Watch Limited is a community benefit society, registered in December 2014 with the Financial Conduct Authority.

We are organised according to a co-operative business model. Proceeds from the enterprise will be reinvested into furthering our social and environmental mission to protect and promote understanding of heritage in Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, and Wiltshire.

We are democratically controlled. Members have one vote, regardless of whether they hold more than the one (£1) share that they purchase on joining.

How we work

Every voice counts when it comes to managing and improving the historic, natural, and built environment that forms the landscape we live in. Everything that Uffington Heritage Watch does will bring the influence of local people to the development and delivery of the local services that impact on our heritage.

People need to feel that their environment belongs to and reflects them and their local community. Heritage needs to feel accessible, and the heritage profession needs to be practical and dynamic and to act on behalf of local people. Uffington Heritage Watch seeks to provide professional conservation and archaeological research and education services to the community, working closely with all local stakeholders.

What we do

Uffington Heritage Watch is an independent organisation. Because we are not-for-profit, we are eligible to apply for Heritage Lottery Funding for our community projects. We can also exercise community development and planning rights under the Localism Act 2011.

  • We will provide you with information about local heritage
  • We will listen to your views and experiences, and invite the local community to participate in heritage projects
  • We will use your views and make them known, in order to influence how local Planning and Heritage services can be improved in Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, and Wiltshire
